Uniform Rules

1. The Knickerbocker Greys fatigue and dress uniforms may not be worn at any functions at any time without special permission from the Board of Directors.
   
2. Cadets must report for duty in complete fatigue uniform. After reporting in, cadets may not leave the Armory until the end of the drill.
   
3. Cadets may borrow missing uniform items from the Uniform Department on only two regular drill days during the year.  They will be marked "out of uniform."
   
4. No cadet may have access to the Uniform Room without a Board member present.
   
5. No food, drink or gum chewing is allowed.
   
6. A cadet's appearance should always be neat and well-groomed.

There is a second-hand Uniform Exchange in the basement of the Armory. Used uniforms, cleaned and in good condition may be returned and exchanged for larger sizes. Shoes, socks and slacks (grey and white) are not included. A $200 deposited is requested; it will be returned at year end or applied to replace any loss.

Special attention should be paid to the white collar worn with the dress uniform. It must be sewn into the neck of the tunic or sewn onto a white collarless T-shirt to be worn under the Dress Tunic.

Black oxfords with absolutely plain uppers are required. The socks must be plain black and the trousers must be long enough to cover the tops of the shoes.

Swords will be issued for Drills and Reviews, but must always remain at the Armory.

All parts of the uniform including swords must be plainly marked with the cadet's name. Neither the Directors or the Commandant will be responsible for any loss of clothing or swords.  Cadets will be responsible for replacing lost items.  

A $200 deposit for uniform usage is requested and will be applied to any losses or damages.

Tuesday Attendance

1. Cadets should report at the Armory one-half hour before drill times. Cadets must report at the attendance table before each drill. Report of attendance is taken by the Directors. All absences must be explained in writing from a parent. Written excuses must be on file before each Dress Review for the preceding period.
   
2. The 100% attendance medals are awarded to cadets with perfect attendance throughout the season.
   
3. The 98% attendance medals are awarded to cadets with no more than three non-excused absences.
   
4. An excused absence, which must be in writing, is defined as: a) A serious conflict with a family or school related commitment. b) Health related issues at the discretion of the Board of Directors.
   
5. On Tuesdays: a) Three times "out of uniform" constitutes one absence. b) Three failures to report constitute one absence. c) Failure to report will stand as an absence unless explained. d) Lateness will be automatically excused when due to a school conflict.
   
6. A cadet with an injury, able to attend but not to drill, should report in uniform as usual, present a note of explanation and remain as a spectator for the drill. He will be marked "Present."
   
7. A Special Award will be given to the cadet who attends the most drills during the season.

Promotions

1. All promotions are determined by the Commandant and his staff.
   
2. All promotions are based on:

   a) Competition drills

   b) Attendance, promptness, conduct, recruiting, upright bearing, neatness in uniform (including polished shoes), alertness and cooperation at drills. To assist Cadets in maintaining complete uniform, a "uniform check" will be made two weeks before each competition drill.

   c) Openings available in each rank.
   

3. Stripes, representing promotions earned, are to be worn by Cadets after promotions are formally announced at the next Review.

Crack Company

A Provisional platoon, the "Crack Company" composed of Officers and Sergeants, give a demonstration at each Review. The aim of "Crack Company" is to instill in the Officers and Sergeants the importance of precision drill so that they may pass this instruction along to the cadets under their command.

Color Guard

The Color Guard attends special civic functions by invitation and is expected to appear at all functions impeccably dressed and groomed and in complete uniform.

Reviews

Cadets are expected to arrive at the Armory at least one hour prior to a Review. Cadets are expected to appear at each Review impeccably dressed and groomed and in complete uniform.

Recruiting

1. Any cadet who recruits another cadet who remains for a season will receive a recruiting ribbon.
   
2. Any cadet who recruits 5 cadets who remain for a season will receive a recruiting medal.

Applicants must be at lease six years of age. Sixteen is retiring age. A cadet who becomes Sixteen after the opening drill may complete the season.

Dues

Dues for the year are $500.00. Checks should be made payable to "The Knickerbocker Greys" and mailed to Treasurer, Knickerbocker Greys, 643 Park Avenue, New York, NY 10021.  We are a non-profit organization and all donations are welcome.  We also offer scholarship help.

Awards

Cadets are expected to write a prompt thank you note to the organization from whom an Award is received. Please contact the Board for all addresses.
