In
Their Own Words
Perhaps the best way to convey the full flavor of the
Knickerbocker Greys is to let the cadets' words speak for themselves. What do
they enjoy about the Greys?
"We have lots of fun marching in our uniforms at
Drills, and especially our dress uniforms at the Reviews."
John, a Browning first grader
"You get to make new friends outside of school and
everybody's really friendly. I'm not going to join the military, though."
Tommy, a Buckley seventh grader
"The Greys help me learn to teach other kids what I have learned."
Paul, a Trinity fourth grader
"Some girls at school wonder why I'm in it.... We
wanted to join after 9/11."
Schuyler, a Hewitt ninth grader
"I'm an only child, so this is sort of like a
second home. Someone always listens to you when you have a problem."
Allen, a Lab School fifth grader
"I learned you have to be able to take orders. Then some day you can
give orders too."
Peter, a St. Ignatius third grader
"I really liked the Father-Cadet Review. I was so proud being on the
parade ground with my Dad."
Carol, a Chapin first grader
"I used to be really shy and I had a serious fear
of public speaking. Major Menegon helped me a lot, step by step."
Eugene, a St. Ignatius eighth grader
"My favorite thing is the Sham Battle. We saw some cool weapons, but
they were loaded with blanks. And my platoon took the hill!"
Joseph, a St. David's second grader
"I like it when Abraham Lincoln spoke to us at Gettysburg. And I
read a book about Gettysburg before we went."
James, a Dwight fifth grader
